What's been up

May 28th, 2008

I realize it’s been about 2 weeks since I posted any updates to this blog. For that I’m sorry, this blog seems to be the first thing I put on the back burner whenever I get busy. Hopefully I can get myself a wireless router soon so I can use my laptop on the regular and don’t have to worry about taking up too much time on my friend’s computer.

On the Florida front: Things have been pretty good, it’s nice to just spend some time with friends. Yesterday evening I got out for a good mile – mile and half walk. I walked over to my friends mother’s house to babysit. It was about 80 degrees at 8 PM but there was a nice breeze I got to the house just as it was getting dark. I was soaked in sweat but it was nice to get out and walk again, I haven’t really walked much since I since I got here. Exercise always gives me a little high.

On that note my allergies have been in high gear, I never had them this bad back home in New York. I don’t what it is in the air, I’m guessing pollen as that’s the only thing that gives me issues back home but I got a bad runny nose, watery itchy eyes and all that. I starting taking  some dollar store allergy pills, they didn’t help much so I got some Benadryl and that helps better. Once I get a few dollars I’m gonna get some Claritin that always helps me.

On the job front: Nothing I applied at another local supermarket, no call back. There’s a Coca-Cola distribution plant not far from here, I was going to apply until I found out I needed a personal vehicle to make deliveries and setup displays; I think that kinda sucks as I don’t have a car. I also applied for Wal-Mart online, I doubt they will hire me as I worked for them for a week or so back in 2003 even though I signed a release form, I didn’t just quit they probably won’t bother highering someone who already quit.

Also, I got Ubuntu installed on my friends computer in a dual boot setup. This way I can save all my passwords and stuff in Firefox under Ubuntu and not have to worry about the crap they download on the windows side getting my passwords and into my files. Ubuntu installed without a hitch on yet another computer! :)

Other than that not much else, I’m babysitting my friends kids all this week at night when his mother leaves for work until his wife comes home, it’s only about 2 hours and they’re sleeping anyhow so I just look at TV. Tomorrow or Thursday we’re moving to a new house about a mile away from here it’s a really nice place, hopefully I can post some pics once we get in there but for today it’s packing, packing and more packing. It’s just my friend and I moving a whole house with lots of big furnature..Oh boy this is gonna be fun. :)

vBulletin 3.7.1 Released

May 28th, 2008

Yesterday, Jelsoft released vBulletin 3.7.1

vBulletin 3.7.1

It is four weeks today since the ‘gold’ release of vBulletin 3.7.0. In that time, we have been busy squashing the inevitable collection of bugs that get reported after large numbers of customers deploy a new major version to their servers.

Full release notice

It’s nothing major it took me more time to upload the files than to preform the actual upgrade. No template changes that I see. It did break the post thanks hack which is strange since it’s only a bug fix release, it shouldn’t break things.

Another intersting thing is vBulletin is now going to scheduled releases:

Scheduled Maintenance Releases

In order to make our maintenance release schedule more predictable for customers, and in an attempt to ensure that bug fixes are passed on to users in a timely fashion, we will now be implementing a regime of pre-scheduled maintenance releases.

A maintenance release is classified as one that contains day-to-day bug fixes that do not include serious data loss issues or security flaws. They are designated (usually) by an incrementing of the third version digit, such as 3.7.1, 3.7.2, 3.7.3 etc.

From now on, the longest time customers will ever wait for bug fixes to be released will be two months.

Toward the end of each month, the developers will evaluate the quantity and severity of the bugs found and fixed in the previous month. If there has been an abnormally high number of bugs reported, or the severity of some of the bugs fixed is considered to warrant an early release, the next maintenance version will be brought forward and will be released to customers on the final Tuesday of that month.

If the quantity and severity of bugs is not unusual, the maintenance version will be released on the final Tuesday of the month, two months following the previous maintenance version.

Security Flaws and Data-Loss Bugs

As usual, we will fix any security flaws and serious data loss bugs as soon as we become aware of their existence, and will do a release as soon as the fix is implemented and tested.

Wherever possible, this will be done in the form of a Patch Level (PL) release, where only a small number of files are updated and no upgrade script is required, but when this is not possible, a full release will be performed, as was the case with 3.6.10 and 3.7.0 Release Candidate 4.

This means will we now be upgrading at least once every 60 days probably sooner. Thankfully these updates are normally painless. I’m thinking about raising my prices for vBulletin management though, it’s a lot of busy work and I hate busy work.

Got to FL

May 15th, 2008

On Tuesday evening I finally arrived in Florida.. The train was on time but the ride sucked! I guess sitting in any seat for 24 hours would get a bit uncomfortable but these seats weren’t at all comfortable. Next time, I’ll fly.

Since I got here things have been great, I got to hang out with my friends and just chill over a couple of beers that was a nice change of pace. My other friend down here has two kids; 18 months and 4 years old they’re so cute! I always enjoy playing with them. :)

Yesterday I got all unpacked which was pretty stupid as we’re moving in a couple of weeks so I’m just gonna have to re-pack it again but I was anxious to make sure nothing got damaged in shipping and nothing did which is great! When I unpacked, I found something wrapped in a plastic bag, I knew I didn’t put it in there because I didn’t pack anything in plastic bags, so I unwrapped it and mom snuck a little angel into my suitcase, that was sweet to I called her and she said this way my angel will always watch over you. Awww.. Mom’s such a mushy one. :D That was sweet though.

Tomorrow I have a job interview lined up, my friend works there and he says that I pretty much got the job but I still gotta do the whole interview dance. I hate interviews, I don’t always make a great first impression. . But I actually helped the boss fix her computer over the phone today so that ought to help with the first impression. ;) For now I’ll probably be working just doubles on weekends, cooking at an old age home. It’s not the best but it’s a start and I really hope I get the job as I got bills to pay.

Anyhow things have been pretty good and fun thus far, I’m certainly enjoying the Florida lifestyle. :)

All packed up part 2

May 10th, 2008

Today I spent most of my time packing up my computer. What hassle this was, the tower itself was super easy. The monitor however was a major pain. I couldn’t get the stand off the LCD, even after reading the manual online several times. Finally, after reading the manual several a million times, I realized that I have a different stand other than the one they were talking about. The stand I have is supposed to fold down and use ‘packing straps’ to hold the hinge in place. I didn’t save the packing straps, the instructions didn’t tell me to.. Mom got home and we used rubber bands and a old wire to tie down the base, that worked but it still wouldn’t fit in the freakin’ box!! Grrr!! It almost fits but the hinge is preventing it from closing. We figured when it’s time to ship mom will take it the UPS store and have them figure it out. We probably just need a bigger box, it’s not being shipped for another few weeks anyhow.

I also put all my paperwork in order and as we speak am charging my MP3 player. My laptop bag is completely packed except for the laptop which I’m typing on now. ;) Half my clothes that I’m taking with me are packed in my large suitcase. I switched out my large carry-on and opted for a bookbag as I’m just carrying some snacks and small stuff in that. Mom did a little shopping for me today, I got beef jerky, trail mix and a few bottles of water. It’s 24 hour train ride so I need something; there is a dining car but I imagine it’s just like an airline $5 for a coke.. No way am I paying those prices.

Other than that I found out I have to buy a router at my friends house. I thought his DSL modem had a router + wireless built in but it doesn’t have either. I would have survived with a wired connection for a while.. There goes another $50 down the drain.

Hopefully the train stops and lets people off to smoke at each stop as I still haven’t quit. :( I know Jersey Transit used to but I’ve never been on Amtrak plus after 9/11 I’m sure trains are stricter about people jumping on and off.

I couldn’t sleep at all last night, I guess I’m getting a bit nervous this is a big change for me plus I worry about Amtrak’s track record as far as crashing goes.. I wound up falling asleep at 6:30 AM and woke up at 11. After I publish this post, I’m going to take little nap, this evening I have to go hook up my neighbors new TV, her old one bit the dust. Hopefully I’ll get to bed a little earlier tonight as tomorrow is mothers day and I’d really like to make mom a nice breakfast. For dinner I’ll be doing chicken Parm, with my sisters help. It should be a nice day, I picked mom up a nice card and an outfit, hope she likes it. :)

All packed up

May 8th, 2008

Yesterday, I spent the morning and afternoon packing boxes to ship off to Florida. Mostly just clothes and a few smaller things, other than clothes all I really packed was my PlayStation 2 and Game Cube. I wound up with 6 boxes; 5 average size and one small one. The cost to ship these? $157! and it was nothing special just regular mail, I about fell over!  Consider this; I’m shipping myself over night to Florida for less than that. What the heck, considering I weigh a lot more, will take up more space than the boxes, will get a climate controlled environment, and will get there a heck of a lot faster than the boxes on the train; I must be ripping Amtrak off…or was the post office ripping me off? Even if you include the supplementary train fare I need to get to Penn station, mailing boxes still costs more!

I was pleasantly surprised to find about 12 brand new shirts still in plastic wrap, I also found a new pair of shorts, cargo sweats, jeans, and a brand new leather belt that’s in addition to about 5 almost brand new shirts that I took out of the package and just hung up.

In some ways, I’m kinda weired with my clothes, I’ll wear the same 3 or 4 pairs of pants and 5 or 6 shirts until they’re either so stained, worn out, or ripped that they get moved exercise status, those are the clothes I walk and do yard work in, after that they get retired to pajama status, I rarely if ever throw out clothes.

At any rate, my boxes are on the way to Florida and I’ll be on my way Monday. I cannot wait!!! :)
