Back online

I just got back on my own internet tubes. ;) I tried to use the wireless networks available to as little as possible because it’s not right so I kept it to just checking my email this morning and ssh’ing into my server to look at ‘top’ for a few seconds.

The cable company gave mom (who went to exchange it) a neat Halloween bag it looks like a boutique shopping bag but it’s go TWCs logo and Halloween figures on it. It’s pretty neat IMHO but even better then that I got a brand spanking new RCA modem. I previously had a Toshiba modem and before that I had the older version of this RCA modem. This modem is flying check out this speed test:

This is with Road Runners standard plan! Wow that thing is flying! Take a look at a speed test from August with the old modem:

Now that was pretty fast and I’m impressed with that speed when I first discovered the cap was upped to 10mb/sec on the standard plan but now I’m getting nearly 20! I think this is one of the few perks of living close enough to the city to reap the (very few) benefits of it. When I realized over the summer that my bandwidth cap doubled from the standard 5mb/sec to 10mb/sec without me paying extra I surmised that it’s because TWC is competing with FOIS in NYC. Which I asked about when I ran into the local cable guy, and he confirmed. I didn’t want to call and ask the company directly as I don’t want them to realize that we’re not actually in NYC and lower the cap. ;)

I like the speed boost, not that it’s much difference as you’re limited by what speed the server can send data at anyhow. I wonder if I’m being somehow effected by Time Warner’s newest technology “Power Boost” which is very possible as right now I’m downloading a Ubuntu ISO to test the speed and am only getting ~630kb/sec which isn’t bad but certainly isn’t as fast the speed test shows. Power Boost is supposed to boost download speeds for large files, ISOs are very large comparatively speaking so I should see the boost but I don’t.. Perhaps I’m being limited by the sending server?

Anyway I’m glad to be back online now I can surf in peace. :)
