Time magazine’s website is reporting that Jay Leno’s prime time show is being axed in February. This doesn’t come as a surprise there has been talk about the show being canceled since shortly after it debuted this past September. I’m really not surprised at all as a fan of Jay Leno the prime time show has just been lame. The first night Jay’s prime time show aired I didn’t know quite to think of the opening I later read a review online from the Washington Post that said the opening was reminiscent of an 80′s cop show, that certainly resonated with me.
I cannot quite put my finger on what makes the show lame when compared to Jay on The Tonight Show. The two are pretty much the same; A monologue, a skit or two, guest interviews, and a music performance. Some additions just me shake my head, like who the heck are they trying to appeal to with the beer pong shot of the day interludes? Obviously it’s the younger audience but I’m only 25 and it seems stupid to me.
As someone who has DVR’d the Jay Leno show since it’s debut and before that the Tonight Show with him the bread and butter of the show is the monologue and the skits with headlines being my favorite skit. The guest interviews I can take or leave a vast majority of the time it’s just someone plugging a movie or TV show. Unless the one the guests is someone I really like the show gets deleted after the monologue and first skit.
There is talk of Jay being moved for a half hour show at 11:35 and Conan being moved to 12:05. Conan has always been the comedian of last resort for me. I’m just not a fan of his comedic style. I’d only tuned into the Late Show with Conan if I had nothing recorded to watch and didn’t feel like watching Nick at Night. The same with the Tonight Show since Conan has taken over, I tune in only if there’s nothing else to watch.
I’m thinking that if Jay moves to 11:35 it will be an abbreviated version of the current show. More than likely the interview portion will be cut and we’ll be left with a monologue and maybe some skits. I’m hoping that we do get some skits out of the deal, headlines at least.
